Project Reality 0.50 Released!
by TheRealFritz on Fri Feb 09, 2007 5:27 pm
The award winning Project Reality and Black Sand Studios teams are proud to announce the official release of the highly anticipated Project Reality v0.5.

Coming just 90 days after the ModDB Mod of the Year "Silver Spanner" award winning Project Reality v0.4, the v0.5 release introduces some of the most radical and innovative game play changes ever seen in a Battlefield 2 mod. We have added an abundance of extra content (listed below), but in this release our main focus was altering how the game is played, even more so than our previous releases. The result has been a completely new gaming experience for both Project Reality veterans and Battlefield 2 recruits!

NEW FEATURES AND GAME MODES:

-Forward Spawn Points
The default Battlefield 2 spawn system has been completely overhauled and reconfigured so that you will now have to rely on your squad leaders, the newly added “Rally Points”, and APC’s for forward spawn points on the battlefield. You heard right, spawn points have gone mobile!

-Vehicle Damage System
Another major feature included in PRv0.5 is our revolutionary new Vehicle Damage System, which has been implemented on almost all vehicles currently available in PR. This new system affects vehicle mobility and/or operational status once they become damaged. If you are in a tank and take damage from an anti-tank round, you may loose the ability to rotate your main turret or one of your tracks may become damaged rendering you immobile. This new system is not limited to just ground forces, as aircraft (including helicopters) are just as vulnerable!

-Tank & Pilot Kits
Building on top of our "Kit Limiting" system in the v0.4 release, we have included a new "Pilot" and "Crewman" kit that must be requested and obtained before a player can pilot an aircraft or operate a tank. Don’t worry though, some vehicles, including light jeeps, are still operable by players without a specific kit.

-Destructible Environments
Included in this release is our first map with a fully destructible environment! All the buildings in Helmand Province can be destroyed with explosives, such as an RPG round or C4 charges. While this map is relatively small, we will expand on this concept in the future!

-Advance and Secure (AAS) v2
In this game mode, each team battles over a "group" of control points (flags) at any given time. A team must capture the entire group of control points before moving on to the next designated group of control points. A "group" of control points can have as little as one control point in them, or as many as 5. One should expect fierce battles erupting over those flags, with very concentrated action where you get both a lot of attack and defense!

NEW WEAPONS AND VEHICLES:

-Chinese QBZ Rifle Series
The Chinese forces have received a much needed upgrade and are now armed with the powerful QBZ-95 rifle series. There are two variants of the rifle, the QBZ-95 “Assault Rifle”, which has a 4x optical sight, and the QBZ-95 “Iron Sights” variant, which is the standard, non-scoped version of the rifle. The version equipped with a UGL will be seen in a future Project Reality release.

-USMC M-14 Marksman Rifle
After many requests from players, the US faction is now armed with the highly coveted M-14 Marksman Rifle. This gas-operated, 7.62mm rifle packs a powerful punch with amazing accuracy and is sure to make any Battlefield 2 sniper jump with joy.

-US AT4 (Anti-Tank)
The US faction has received yet another new weapon to its arsenal, the AT4 Anti-Tank system. This relatively small, but extremely powerful, anti-tank system has been used by the US military for years and now is included in the Project Reality mod as the USMC light AT weapon.

-British Merlin HC3 Transport Helicopter
We have continued building on our foundations of the British Armed Forces in the last release and have included the Merlin HC3 helicopter. This mammoth of an aircraft can transport up to 6 players and includes a fully functional rear loading ramp which is opened and closed by the co-pilot.

-British Land Rover
The British forces have finally been blessed with the addition of the Land Rover. This light jeep is armed with two 7.62 calibre GPMGs (General Purpose Machine Guns) and can carry up to 3 players.

All of these new game play changes combined with the addition of new vehicles, weapons, and maps, promise players the most realistic gaming experience available for the Battlefield 2 platform. The Project Reality Player Guide will be updated with change logs and other important content within the next 48 hours, so keep a close eye on the Project Reality website for more detailed information on v0.5’s features.

As always, the Project Reality Team would also like to thank all of the supporting Battlefield 2 mod websites, server providers, and of course our dedicated community for all of their hard work and continued support. In particular, we want to send a special thanks to our tester crew who did a fantastic job helping us sort out some very complex issues with this release. THANK YOU TESTERS! Without all of your combined efforts and contributions, Project Reality would not be where it is today!

Minor forum update
by TheRealFritz on Sun Feb 04, 2007 9:32 pm
I was getting a little tired of doing so much moderation in the forums just to weed out the eternal mortgage, viagra, xanax, etc automated postings. I've nuked about 1500 users that were likely automated entries (if yours accidentally got caught in the crossfire, sorry!) and have installed a brand spanking new captcha that should be harder to deal with for unwanted visitors. I've also updated various pieces of software, including the forums and have restored the forum leaderboard to its former glory after a few days of downtime.

Last, but not least, you can expect GloryHoundz South to be back after the release of Project Reality 0.5 which should happen on February 8th, 2007. It'll stay passworded as it has been, to make sure that people who play on it are at least familiar with the http://realitymod.com forums.

Commodore 69 Reviews the PRMM Battlefield 2 Mod
by HernanCortez on Sun Jan 29, 2006 7:52 pm

Today I’ll be reviewing the PRMM Mod for Battlefield 2. What is the PRMM Mod you ask? It’s a modification for BF2 that changes a lot of the existing qualities of the game. On their web site the creators state that their objective is “to recreate a realistic combat environment.” How do they accomplish this? The PRMM developers have modified some of the physics and rules of the standard game. Here are some of the changes:

- Kill Indicator Removed
- Eliminate Friendly Indicator
- Realistic Ballistics
- Realistic Damage
- No Crosshairs
- No Health Meter
- Realistic Reload Times
- No UAV
- PRMM also has its own ranking system

When coming from standard BF2 to PRMM the initial impression can be one of confusion. The lack of all the extra information that BF2 provides can leave you feeling bewildered. Yes, it will definitely take some getting used to. As I started playing PRMM, one of the most immediate realizations that I had was that realistic damage is definitely in play here. If someone gets the drop on you here, you are pretty much dead. By the same token, when you get the drop on someone, you don’t need to go through an entire clip in order to kill someone. This to me is one of the most refreshing changes introduced by PRMM. I always found the amount of damage that a player in BF2 could take ridiculous. In this aspect, PRMM really shines. The use of tactical movement, cover and concealment is imperative here. Try to run around like a clown from point to point, and you will find yourself quickly dispatched. You’ll also need to use your iron sights. There are no centered yellow crosshairs here so you will find that only in the most close range situations will you be able to go without properly aiming. There is also no health meter. However, if you are seriously wounded, you will be reminded every few seconds by a grunting sound along with a red framing of your screen. Fail to find a medic to heal you, and you will be dead soon. This is just one of the aspects of PRMM that requires teamwork.

Snipers are a bit of a problem in this mod. If you don’t have a sniper of your own to keep enemy snipers busy, you could be in for a nightmare. Is this realistic? Yes. Is it bad for game play? Depends. If sniper weapons were as deadly in vanilla BF2 as they are here, then gameplay would definitely be adversely affected. Why? For the most part vanilla BF2 suffers from a chronic lack of team play. This results in a widespread inability to deal with high lethality threats. PRMM makes it very clear that the unorganized mob approach will have little success against a cohesive unit. However, as I have recently on some videos from Iraq, when a sniper is encountered, reacting with tank shells, close air support or artillery is often the solution. So if you suspect there is a sniper in that building over there, just demolish the building and problem solved. This is not an option here. You will most likely need to move very carefully when snipers are abundant.

During a recent gaming session, I was in a pretty large base that was under attack by helicopters. Unfortunately, there were no AA emplacements anywhere to be found. This allowed helicopters to make passes with impunity. While I’m sure the helo pilots found this amusing, the ground pounders had to come up with a solution. Two players in vehicles that carry heavy machine guns such as a hummer or FAV was the solution here. A few bursts of HMG fire and the helo either runs away smoking or just plain blows up. Definitely more realistic. Helicopters are extremely vulnerable to machine gun fire. I remember when I was in the army, we had to ride helicopters with our rifles pointed down, as any accidental discharge up into the engines could possibly bring the whole bird down. But I digress.

Overall, I found that the need to move about stealthily provided for an increased sense of immersion. Seeing enemies moving in the distance without a big red sign over their heads made it all look a bit more real. If you’re able to join a squad and work with voice communications, then the experience can be all the more rewarding. I think PRMM is a very well made mod. One of the major complaints about standard BF2 is its arcadish sometimes arbitrary game play. PRMM does a great job of eliminating most of this. For those of you who crave realism, PRMM is the way to go.

Leaderboard and Stats
by TheRealFritz on Wed Dec 28, 2005 7:17 pm
I've finally gotten around to completely fixing (as far as I know) the local leaderboard shown at the top of the forums, as well as the awards retrieval. Please note that the leaderboard shows stats from the Alternative Battlefield Ranking servers from their Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2 stats world.

As some of you may have figured out by now, the leaderboard is sorted by number of awards received first, then by score. In order for you to appear on that leaderboard, you just have to access your stats on this website either by looking up your stats or using the sig generator.

The reason for the awards not showing on my stats system was a silly typo on my end, that's all fixed now. This of course also means that the sig now includes the correct numbers of awards.

How to get in-game VOIP working for Battlefield 2
by TheRealFritz on Thu Dec 08, 2005 10:14 pm
If you've been unable to hear other people using Battlefield 2's built-in VOIP, here's how you can get it to work: configuring your router to forward ports 55123 to 55125 to your internal IP should do the trick.

There are two ways to do this on a Linksys router. For both you first need to go to Applications & Gaming tab on your router's configuration (usually reachable at http://192.168.1.1). Then you either:
go to the Port Triggering sub section and configure as follows: Application (BF), Triggered Range (16567-16567), Forwarded Range (55123-55125) and make sure to check the Enabled checkbox.

configure a port range forward with a start port of 55123 and an end port of 55125. For this to work, you'll also have to specify your internal IP on that line (the easiest way to find that out is to type ipconfig on your windows machine)

Violent/Sexual Video Game Law Struck Down in IL
by HernanCortez on Sat Dec 03, 2005 6:51 am
In July, Illinois passed a law banning the sale of video games with sexual or violent content to minors. On Friday December 2nd, U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kennelly ruled that law is unconstitutional. Kennelly wrote the following: "In this country, the state lacks the authority to ban protected speech on the ground that it affects the listener's or observer's thoughts and attitudes." The Governor of IL, Rod Blagojevich, vowed to appeal the decision.

This has been a hot topic as of late with California and Michigan passing similar laws. The intent here according to the framers of the laws is to protect children from being exposed to violent or sexual content. These laws are usually backed by stiff financial penalties for violators. This raises the question regarding how much involvement government should have in the protection of minors from immoral influences. In raising this question, we must differentiate between what can be shown as actual harm and what is mostly seen as perceived harm. For example there are laws that prevent the sale of alcohol and tobacco products to minors. One could argue that there is solid evidence that the consumption of alcohol and tobacco products by minors would have a definite negative impact on the health of said naughty boys and girls.

However, the stretch comes when we apply the same logic to what is perceived as harmful influences. This brings a more subjective judgment into play and therein lies the danger. Just what exactly is violent or sexy enough to warrant a ban on the sale to minors? Do we want the government or some government sanctioned agency that is susceptible to lobbying deciding what is appropriate for sale to minors? Do we want a nanny state to aid parents in ensuring that little Timmy is not enacting drive bys with the latest shoot em up title? I’m sure this could be argued ad nauseum. However, one thing I have noticed is this. The Nintendo generation for the most part understands that playing violent games at a young age did not turn us into psychopathic killers. So when you occasionally read a story about a kid who could not distinguish the line between a game and reality, who then went out and committed an atrocity. Realize the it’s the kid who has the problem, not the game.

The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky Review
by HernanCortez on Sun Nov 20, 2005 7:43 pm

Welcome to another installment of Commodore 69’s reviews. Today we will be reviewing The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky. The Glenlivet is a single malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland with 40% alcohol by volume.

So, with Thanksgiving and cold temperatures just around the corner, I thought I would review a product that could help keep these things at bay. The holidays can find you having to deal with long lost relatives that are just waiting to bring up painful memories from the past. To add insult to injury, short days, and cold temperatures come into play to make things worse. This is where the Glenlivet comes in.

This whisky is ohh so smooth. I’m not gonna lie to you and tell you that it doesn’t bite. There’s no whisky on earth that doesn’t pack a bit of a kick at the end, but this one really makes it a rather pleasant experience. As for aftertaste, it has a dark smoky feel to it. Very nice indeed. You can drink this baby down and you WILL get a hangover, but it won’t be nearly as bad as it would be were you to load up on Jack this holiday season.

As for your relatives and the cold, drink a few glasses of this and you’ll have tightly wound comebacks varying in levels of profanity from the height of English culture to the depths of trailer park trash. I guess it all depends where you want to take this roller coaster.

So, if you’re looking for some hot holiday whisky action this holiday season The Glenlivet is definitely worth a look.

Pros: Smooth, easier than most whiskies to put down. Nice aftertase.

Cons: If you overdo it, you will pay. Of course this applies to all whiskies.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky, Sig Sauer P229 not included.

Remember, whisky and gunplay don't mix.

The Steam Syndrome
by TheRealFritz on Sat Nov 12, 2005 2:28 pm
Valve started a regrettable industry trend a year ago when they launched Halflife 2 through their online distribution system called Steam. Now you may be asking yourself why this should be regrettable and I'll go into the reasons of why I think that is so.

Firstly, if you buy their game through Steam, you pay pretty much the same as for the boxed version, yet you get less: no printed manual, no discs. Why is that so bad? Well, it gets me directly to my second reason which is that you don't own the game anymore. In order to play the game (even when purchased on CDs, since they force you to use Steam even there), you have to be online at least once. That's right, it requires an internet connection even to play the single player version. Their system also allows them to revoke your playing privileges (that's what they are now, you don't own the game anymore) at their whim and there's little to nothing you can do about it. What's worse, should the company ever go under, which is not uncommon for software companies, you lose access to your game. Even the CDs you bought are now worthless.

Now a few days ago we saw a continuation of what Valve started when EA announced their EA Downloader and made available Battlefield 2 Special Forces for "preloading". Just as was to be expected, they are charging the regular retail price for the download: $29.99.

I wouldn't be surprised if companies start charging extra for retail store copies, rather than charging less for the downloadable version. So don't be lazy and vote with your wallet by buying retail versions of your games rather than downloading them.
